The Metro Nashville Police Department report that a 29-year-old man Died on a Sunday morning after being struck while inspecting his vehicle following a crash on Interstate 40.
Authorities say the initial collision occurred around 3:30 a.m. in the westbound lanes near the Hermitage Avenue exit in downtown Nashville. A Dodge Journey rear-ended a Nissan van, causing both vehicles to become disabled. The Nissan pulled over to the right shoulder, while the Dodge moved to the far left lane.
The driver of the Dodge, later identified as Darius Woods, was outside his vehicle checking for damage when he was struck by an Acura MDX.
Woods was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased. The 46-year-old driver of the Acura was also taken to the hospital with critical injuries. It is not yet known if the Nissan driver sustained any injuries.
Authorities have not released further details at this time. Metro police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash and are working to determine contributing factors.
Officials are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward to assist with the ongoing investigation.
