Authorities in Perkins Township are investigating after a 66-year-old man who had been reported missing by family members was found deceased Thursday morning.
According to the Perkins Township Police Department, officers responded shortly before 8 a.m. to the 3000 block of East Perkins Avenue after receiving reports that a body had been discovered in a nearby field. Police later identified the man as Craig Dawes, 66, of Perkins Township in Erie County.
Police Chief Jeff Musser said officers were already at the scene when members of Dawes’ family contacted authorities to report that he was missing. The discovery of the body and the missing person report occurred around the same time, prompting investigators to begin examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Officials have not yet released details about how Dawes died. The Lucas County Coroner’s Office is currently working to determine the cause of decease through further examination. Authorities say investigations like this often involve collecting evidence from the scene, reviewing available information, and speaking with family members or potential witnesses to better understand what may have happened.
At this time, police have not indicated whether foul play is suspected. However, investigators emphasized that the case remains active while officials work to determine the exact circumstances surrounding Dawes’ decease. In a statement shared on social media, Chief Musser expressed sympathy to the victim’s loved ones.
“On behalf of the department, I extend my condolences to the Dawes family during this difficult time,” Musser said. “Our officers remain committed to investigating this incident thoroughly and completely.”
Community members who may have seen Dawes prior to the discovery or who may have information related to his disappearance are being encouraged to come forward.
Police say tips from the public can sometimes provide valuable information that helps investigators understand timelines and events leading up to incidents like this. Anyone with information regarding Dawes’ disappearance or movements before the incident is asked to contact Detective Dylan Smith with the Perkins Township Police Department.
Authorities say the investigation will continue until officials can determine what led to Dawes’ decease. As the community awaits further updates, the case serves as a reminder of the importance of reporting missing persons quickly and assisting investigators whenever possible.
