Authorities are investigating a fatal house fire that occurred early Friday morning in Stafford Township, Ocean County. According to local police, the fire was reported at approximately 1:20 a.m. on February 13, 2026. Emergency crews responded to a residence in the township after receiving reports of a structure fire.
Police said two individuals inside the home were able to exit safely. Both were transported to area hospitals for evaluation and are currently listed in stable condition.
A 92-year-old woman, identified by authorities as Betty Matero, was unable to escape the residence. Officials confirmed that she later died as a result of injuries sustained in the fire.
The incident remains under investigation. However, a preliminary review by authorities indicates the fire began in an outdoor storage area attached to or near the home. Investigators believe the fire was likely caused by a failure involving lithium-ion batteries.
Officials have not released additional details as the investigation continues.
