Authorities have identified a man whose body was recovered from the Chicago River on Saturday morning on the city’s North Side.
According to the Chicago Police Department, officers responded to a marine distress call around 7:20 a.m. in the 5200 block of North Virginia Avenue in the Lincoln Square area. The call reported a situation along the north branch of the river near River Park.
Emergency responders from the Chicago Fire Department arrived at the scene and located a man in the water. Crews worked to recover the individual from the river as part of the emergency response.
Authorities later confirmed that the individual was a 52-year-old man. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified him as Ashraf Mahomed.
Officials say the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear at this time. Investigators have not yet released details about how the man entered the water or the events leading up to the discovery.
