Family members, fellow service members, and residents of Nelson County are mourning the loss of Technical Sgt. Ashley Pruitt, a Bardstown native who died while serving on a military mission overseas.
According to the U.S. Air Force, the 34-year-old was among six airmen who died in Iraq during an air refueling mission involving a KC-135 aircraft. The mission was conducted in support of Operation Epic Fury.
Technical Sgt. Pruitt began her service in the U.S. Air Force in 2017. During her military career, she completed four deployments in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2026. She served with the 99th Air Refueling Squadron based in Birmingham, Alabama, which operates under the 6th Air Refueling Wing at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida.
In her role as Assistant Flight Chief of Operations and KC-135 Instructor Boom Operator, Pruitt was responsible for supporting aircrew readiness and training. According to the Air Force, she helped instruct other boom operators in aerial refueling procedures and played an important role in ensuring safe and effective flight operations.
Before joining the military, Pruitt had already developed a strong reputation for leadership and dedication within her hometown community.
She graduated from Nelson County High School, where she was actively involved in the Air Force Junior ROTC program. Her former instructor, Col. Donna Lucchese, described Pruitt as a committed and driven student who demonstrated a deep desire to serve her country.
Lucchese noted that Pruitt helped build the foundation of the school’s AFJROTC program and quickly emerged as one of its most respected cadets. She received numerous awards for leadership, academic achievement, and community service, completing nearly 400 service hours before graduating.
Former teachers and classmates recall her as someone who consistently demonstrated compassion and a willingness to help others. One example often shared is when she donated prize money from a local essay competition to support a project assisting homeless veterans.
Local leaders and community members have also paid tribute to Pruitt’s life and service. In a statement, the City of Bardstown described her as a patriot whose dedication and sacrifice will not be forgotten.
Kentucky State Sen. Jimmy Higdon and Rep. Candy Massaroni also issued a joint message honoring her commitment to duty, noting that she represented her state and country with courage and pride.
As tributes continue to pour in, many across Nelson County are reflecting on her dedication to service and the impact she made on her community.
How can communities best honor the service and sacrifice of military members who give their lives in the line of duty?
