A North Judson resident has died following a hunting accident Saturday night in Fulton County, according to authorities.

Emergency crews were dispatched just before 10:30 p.m. to the area near County Road 500 West, south of State Road 110, after receiving reports of a hunting-related injury. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources said a group was raccoon hunting when one hunter fired at an animal climbing a tree. Officials reported that the round ricocheted off the tree and struck 31-year-old Andrew Boots.

Boots was transported to Memorial Hospital of South Bend for medical treatment. Authorities later confirmed that he died from his injuries.

The Indiana DNR is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. No additional details have been released at this time.

Officials remind hunters to follow all firearm safety guidelines and remain aware of their surroundings while in the field. Further updates are expected as the investigation continues.
