His passing has left a deep impact across multiple communities and departments.
Officer Sanders was fatally injured in the early hours of Nov. 20 while on duty in Alhambra. The collision occurred at an intersection shortly after 3 a.m. Sanders had been with the department for eight months and was working a colleague’s shift that morning. Before joining Alhambra police, he served with the Long Beach Police Department.
The memorial service was held at Shepherd Church in Porter Ranch, where officers from across the region stood in solidarity with the Alhambra Police Department. The service was led by Pastor Ave Anaya and attended by Chief Garrett Kennedy, who delivered heartfelt remarks about Sanders’ dedication to public service. A solemn procession transported his body to the church, with emergency vehicles lining the route. Two fire trucks formed an arch draped with an American flag as a tribute.

Authorities reported that the SUV involved in the crash was allegedly being driven by 27-year-old Steven Ara Zapata. A woman who was riding in the SUV, identified as 42-year-old Gabriela Moreno, also died as a result of the crash. Another passenger sustained more serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Zapata was hospitalized with moderate injuries before being taken into custody. He has since entered a plea of not guilty to several charges.
Officials have not confirmed whether Sanders was actively involved in the pursuit of the SUV at the time of the collision. State Sen. Sasha Renée Pérez, who previously served as mayor of Alhambra, also expressed her condolences, noting the deep sense of loss felt across the city.
