Alec Sanders Death News – A large gathering of law enforcement personnel, community leaders, loved ones, and supporters came together in Porter Ranch on Tuesday to honor the memory of Officer Alec Sanders, a 28-year-old member of the Alhambra Police Department who lost his life in a devastating crash involving an SUV that authorities believe had been reported stolen. His passing has left a deep impact across multiple communities and departments.

Officer Sanders was fatally injured in the early hours of Nov. 20 while on duty in Alhambra. The collision occurred at an intersection shortly after 3 a.m. Sanders had been with the department for eight months and was working a colleague’s shift that morning. Before joining Alhambra police, he served with the Long Beach Police Department.

The memorial service was held at Shepherd Church in Porter Ranch, where officers from across the region stood in solidarity with the Alhambra Police Department. The service was led by Pastor Ave Anaya and attended by Chief Garrett Kennedy, who delivered heartfelt remarks about Sanders’ dedication to public service. A solemn procession transported his body to the church, with emergency vehicles lining the route. Two fire trucks formed an arch draped with an American flag as a tribute.

Those who served alongside Sanders described him as a quiet yet determined officer who approached his duties with professionalism and unwavering commitment. Colleagues noted that he was always willing to step in, respond to calls, and support his team without hesitation.

Authorities reported that the SUV involved in the crash was allegedly being driven by 27-year-old Steven Ara Zapata. A woman who was riding in the SUV, identified as 42-year-old Gabriela Moreno, also died as a result of the crash. Another passenger sustained more serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Zapata was hospitalized with moderate injuries before being taken into custody. He has since entered a plea of not guilty to several charges.

Officials have not confirmed whether Sanders was actively involved in the pursuit of the SUV at the time of the collision. They also did not release information regarding the status of his vehicle’s emergency equipment. Both vehicles suffered extensive damage in the impact, and first responders rushed Sanders to a nearby hospital, where he later passed away.

Chief Kennedy spoke about Sanders’ reputation as someone who stepped up for every call. He remembered him as a disciplined, reliable partner whose love for fitness inspired others. He added that Sanders’ focus, steadiness, and strong work ethic earned him tremendous respect among his peers. Outside of work, Sanders enjoyed traveling and was a devoted Dallas Cowboys fan.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, public officials, including L.A. County Supervisor Hilda Solis and Governor Gavin Newsom, called for flags at government buildings to be lowered in Sanders’ honor. State Sen. Sasha Renée Pérez, who previously served as mayor of Alhambra, also expressed her condolences, noting the deep sense of loss felt across the city.

Newsom issued a statement on behalf of himself and his wife, offering condolences to Sanders’ family and colleagues. He commended the officer’s bravery and service, emphasizing that his sacrifice would not be forgotten.

District Attorney Nathan Hochman also released a statement expressing sorrow for all lives lost in the crash and reaffirming that his office intends to pursue the case with seriousness and fairness. Prosecutors noted that Zapata faces a lengthy sentence if ultimately convicted.

Officer Sanders is survived by his fiancée, two younger sisters, and a brother. His passing has left a profound void in the department and among those who knew him, but his dedication to service and the positive impact he made in such a short time will continue to be remembered.
