Law enforcement agencies in Huntsville are actively searching for a suspect connected to a deadly shooting earlier this week, while several nearby schools have temporarily increased security measures as a precaution.
According to the Huntsville Police Department, officers are looking for 20-year-old Ahmad Khalil Barney, who has an active warrant in connection with a shooting that occurred Wednesday at an apartment complex on Julia Street. Authorities say the victim, 19-year-old Nadiya Dayana Elise Perkins of Montgomery, died after the incident.
Police said they received information Friday morning suggesting the suspect may have been in the area near Jordan Road and Shields Road. When officers attempted to locate him, investigators say he ran into a nearby wooded area. Authorities advised the public not to approach the suspect and to contact emergency services immediately if he is seen.
Multiple agencies, including the U.S. Marshals Service and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, are assisting with the search.
Out of caution, Madison County Schools placed several campuses on a “secure perimeter” status. During this precautionary measure, exterior doors remain locked, visitors are restricted, and outdoor activities are temporarily paused while classes and indoor learning continue as scheduled. Officials stated there is currently no indication of a direct threat to students or staff.
A statement shared with students confirmed that Perkins was a student at Alabama A&M University.
Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing as officers continue searching for the suspect and gathering information about the incident.
As law enforcement works to locate the suspect and ensure community safety, how can residents stay alert and support authorities during active investigations in their neighborhoods?
