Phoenix police have identified a 22-year-old man who died following an officer-involved shooting in the early hours of March 12, as authorities continue to review the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to a statement released by Phoenix police spokesperson Jen Zak, officers responded shortly after 2 a.m. to reports of a shooting near 32nd Street and Paradise Lane. When officers arrived in the area, they encountered an individual later identified as Aiden Piekarz walking along the roadway. Police reported that he was holding a handgun at the time.
Authorities said officers issued commands for the individual to drop the weapon, but those instructions were not followed. Police stated that as the situation developed, one officer discharged their firearm. Officials added that the individual was later transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No officers or members of the public were reported injured during the incident.
The name of the officer involved has not been released, in line with standard procedure. Officials noted that the case remains under active investigation, and further details will be shared as they become available.
The incident is one of several recent officer-involved shootings reported in Phoenix. According to data compiled by local media, multiple cases have occurred across Arizona this year, with several involving Phoenix police. Authorities have indicated that recent incidents, including this one, will be reviewed by the Arizona Department of Public Safety’s Major Incident Division, which oversees investigations into use-of-force cases involving Phoenix officers.
Police also confirmed that other officer-involved incidents were reported in the days following March 12, including responses to domestic-related calls in different parts of the city. These cases are being handled separately but are part of a broader review process led by state investigators.
Officials emphasized that the investigation into the March 12 shooting is ongoing, and determining the events leading up to the encounter remains a priority. Authorities are urging the public to rely on verified updates and avoid spreading unconfirmed information while the review continues.
Phoenix police say they remain committed to transparency and accountability throughout the investigative process. Further updates are expected as investigators gather additional evidence and complete their review.
