Concordia University, Nebraska confirmed that one of its student athletes died and three others were injured in a crash on Friday night. Authorities identified the student who died as 22-year-old Matthew Wing of Seward, a junior on the university’s track and field team.

The three other students involved were also members of Concordia’s track and field program, from Omaha, Stromsburg, and Lincoln. The university expressed deep sorrow over the incident, asking for prayers for the campus community and the families and friends of those affected. “Our Concordia Nebraska family is heartbroken,” the university said in a statement.

According to a crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the incident occurred at 10:20 p.m. on Interstate 49 in Harrisonville, Missouri. Wing was driving a northbound Toyota Prius when it collided with a southbound Ford Explorer that had entered the northbound lanes. The collision caused the Prius to catch fire, while the Ford came to rest in the median.

Wing was pronounced dead at the scene. All three passengers in the Prius were taken to local hospitals. Authorities reported that one sustained serious injuries, while the other two sustained minor injuries.

The driver of the Ford was described as a 30-year-old man from Lee’s Summit, Missouri. He was hospitalized with serious injuries. Officials have not released further details regarding the circumstances leading to the crash.

The university emphasized the importance of support and community in the aftermath of the tragedy. Students, faculty, and local residents are encouraged to offer care and compassion during this difficult time. Concordia’s statement also highlighted the role of faith and community as a source of comfort and healing.

Incidents like this remind campus communities of the importance of safety, awareness, and support networks for students traveling and living away from home. Authorities continue to investigate the crash.
