Authorities in Charlotte are investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred Thursday night in the Plaza Midwood area of east Charlotte.
According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, the crash happened around 10:15 p.m. on March 12 at the intersection of The Plaza and Hamorton Place. Investigators say a Honda Odyssey allegedly ran a stop sign and collided with a Kia Soul traveling through the intersection.
Police confirmed that 23-year-old Sophie Klippel died as a result of the crash. Two other people in the vehicle were injured and transported for medical care. Officials described their injuries as non-life-threatening.
Authorities identified the driver of the Kia Soul as 21-year-old Lena Klippel. A passenger in the vehicle, 62-year-old Kelly Klippel, was also injured in the crash. Police said there was no indication that the driver of the Kia was impaired at the time of the incident.
Investigators reported that the driver of the Honda Odyssey exited the vehicle after the collision and fled the scene on foot. Police have not released additional details about the suspect or whether anyone has been taken into custody as of Friday.
