Authorities have identified a woman who died following a single-vehicle rollover crash late Wednesday night along Interstate 10 near the community of Desert Center in Riverside County, California. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the victim was Margarita Mares De Torres, 61, of Greenfield.
The crash occurred shortly before 11 p.m. on the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10, west of Red Cloud Mine Road. Emergency responders were called to the scene after reports of a vehicle rollover along the highway. Investigators say a 2011 Ford Ranger pickup truck, driven by a 62-year-old man from Greenfield, was traveling eastbound when the vehicle veered toward the dirt center median.
Authorities reported that the truck overturned and eventually came to rest on its left side in the median area. During the crash, De Torres was ejected from the vehicle. Officials later confirmed that she died at the scene.
The driver of the pickup truck, who has not been publicly identified, was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the incident. According to the CHP, he sustained minor injuries and was transported to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs for medical evaluation and treatment.
Investigators noted that De Torres was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Authorities also stated that alcohol or drugs are not currently believed to have been factors in the incident. However, officials say the exact circumstances leading up to the crash remain under investigation.
At this time, law enforcement has not released details about the relationship between the driver and the passenger. Traffic investigators are continuing to review the scene and gather additional information to determine what may have caused the vehicle to leave the roadway.
Single-vehicle crashes can occur for a variety of reasons, including road conditions, driver distraction, mechanical issues, or sudden changes in traffic situations. The California Highway Patrol is asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who may have information related to the incident to come forward and assist with the investigation.
Officials say that public cooperation can sometimes provide valuable insight into the events leading up to roadway accidents. Authorities continue to remind drivers and passengers about the importance of wearing seatbelts and remaining attentive while traveling on highways, particularly during nighttime driving when visibility can be reduced.
As investigators work to determine the cause of the crash, the community awaits further updates regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident.
