Authorities in Akron, Ohio, are investigating a shooting incident that left a 17-year-old dead early Wednesday morning following an exchange of gunfire between two vehicles. Police say a 15-year-old boy has been taken into custody in connection with the case.
According to the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office, the victim has been identified as 17-year-old Honore Sommerville of Akron. Officials confirmed that he died after being taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Police said the incident happened around 12:20 a.m. on the entrance ramp to Ohio Route 8 from East Tallmadge Avenue.
Investigators say the situation began when two vehicles became involved in a confrontation that escalated into gunfire. Authorities reported that multiple shots were exchanged between the occupants of the vehicles during the incident.
According to police, a 28-year-old man traveling with his girlfriend along East Tallmadge Avenue reported that their vehicle came under gunfire from another car. The man returned fire during the encounter before leaving the area and contacting law enforcement.
Emergency crews responded to the scene shortly afterward. Sommerville, who was inside one of the vehicles, was transported by paramedics to Akron Children’s Hospital Medical Center for treatment. Authorities later confirmed that he died from his injuries.
Investigators say the victim’s 15-year-old brother was later arrested in connection with the incident. Police reported that the teenager admitted to firing shots toward the other vehicle.
Authorities also stated that the teen told investigators he disposed of the firearm following the incident. According to police, the vehicle used during the confrontation had been reported stolen.
The 15-year-old is currently facing several charges, including felonious assault, tampering with evidence, and theft of a motor vehicle. Because he is a minor, officials have not released his name.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the confrontation and the events that led to the exchange of gunfire between the vehicles.
Incidents involving firearms between moving vehicles present serious risks not only to those involved but also to other drivers and bystanders who may be nearby.
Authorities have not yet announced whether additional charges could be filed as the investigation continues.
Law enforcement officials are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who may have additional information to contact local authorities as they work to determine exactly what happened.
