Authorities in Santa Cruz County have identified the person who died following a structure fire that broke out Monday night in Capitola. Officials say the incident is still under investigation as firefighters and investigators work to determine what caused the blaze.
According to the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office, the victim has been identified as 75-year-old Robert Edgren, a resident of Capitola. Officials have not yet released the exact cause of decease.
Emergency crews responded Monday night to reports of a fire at an apartment complex located at 204 Monterey Avenue. When firefighters arrived at the scene, they found flames affecting both the first and second floors of the building.
Authorities said the fire also spread into a neighboring two-story commercial structure, creating a complex situation for first responders as they worked to contain the blaze and search for anyone inside.
Firefighters quickly began rescue and search operations inside the building. During the search, crews located one individual who was then transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Officials later confirmed that the person died after being taken to the hospital.
Investigators later identified that individual as Robert Edgren. A second person at the scene received medical attention but was treated there and did not require hospital transport, according to emergency officials.
During the response, one firefighter also sustained a minor injury. Authorities said the injury was not considered serious, though additional details were not released.
Fire crews were able to bring the fire under control within approximately one hour. However, responders remained at the scene overnight to monitor the building and ensure that no additional flare-ups or rekindling occurred.
Officials say these precautionary steps are standard procedure following major structure fires to prevent hidden hot spots from reigniting. Investigators from local fire agencies, along with other authorities, are now working to determine how the fire started. As of now, the cause has not been confirmed.
