Authorities are investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that occurred early Sunday morning along Interstate 69 in Greene County.

According to the Indiana State Police, troopers were called to the scene around 4:30 a.m. on March 8 after receiving reports of a pickup truck that had overturned in the median of the southbound lanes near Springville, just south of Bloomington.

When first responders arrived, they located the driver in the median area near the crash site. Authorities later identified the driver as 39-year-old Brandon M. Koontz of Crane.

Preliminary information released by investigators indicates the truck left the roadway and struck a ditch located in the center median. Officials say the impact caused the vehicle to become airborne before it rolled multiple times and eventually came to rest in the median.

Emergency personnel from local fire departments and Greene County EMS responded to assist at the scene. The investigation also involved the Greene County Sheriff’s Department and the Greene County Coroner’s Office.

Authorities confirmed that Koontz died as a result of the crash. Officials say toxicology testing is pending as part of the standard investigative process.

Troopers remained at the location for several hours while they documented the scene and gathered evidence to better understand what may have led to the crash. At this time, the investigation remains ongoing.

Serious highway crashes can happen quickly and often highlight the importance of alert driving and road safety awareness.

As investigators continue reviewing the circumstances of this crash, many are asking an important question: what steps can drivers take to reduce the risk of early-morning accidents and make highways safer for everyone?
