Pasadena police are continuing to investigate a Monday evening shooting that resulted in the decease of a suspect and left an officer injured.

Authorities say they received a 911 call around 7:30 p.m. reporting a shooting near the Metro A Line Sierra Madre Villa station. When officers arrived, they found a man with a gunshot wound and learned the suspect had fled the scene. A foot pursuit led officers to intercept the suspect at Electronic Drive and Sierra Madre Villa Avenue, where he was shot and killed.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner identified the suspect as 32-year-old Malcom Buchanan. Family members indicated he may have been struggling with mental health issues. Police have not released further details about the circumstances of the shooting as the investigation continues.

One Pasadena resident, who recently moved to the neighborhood, expressed shock over the incident, saying, “We never expected this to happen here.”

The officer involved, identified as Bryan Vasquez, a five-year veteran of the Pasadena Police Department, was wounded during the confrontation. Police report he underwent surgery and is currently in stable but guarded condition. Chief Gene Harris praised the medical team and affirmed the department’s support, stating, “Our officer is a dedicated public servant who put his life on the line to protect the community. We will remain by his side throughout his recovery.”

The department emphasized that the investigation into the shooting is ongoing and encouraged anyone with information to come forward. Officials are also highlighting the importance of community safety and cooperation with law enforcement during such incidents.

As Pasadena residents process the event, questions remain about the circumstances that led to the confrontation. How can communities and law enforcement better prevent violent incidents while ensuring public safety?
