A Mexican national has died while in custody at the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Southern California, according to local and international officials.

Los Angeles City Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez identified the man as Alberto Gutierrez Reyes of Westlake. In a public statement, Hernandez said he died while detained at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center. She alleged that he had been denied medical care prior to his death.

In a message shared on social media, Hernandez’s office described the case as the ninth reported death in ICE custody this year and criticized federal detention policies. The statement also called for broader reforms to immigration enforcement and detention practices.

Mexico’s Secretariat of Foreign Affairs issued a statement expressing concern and said it would demand a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the decease of its national. The agency stated that it aims to determine responsibility and ensure that similar incidents do not occur in the future.

As of publication, ICE has not publicly released details regarding the circumstances of the death. Media outlets have requested comment from the agency.

The Adelanto facility, located in Adelanto, houses individuals undergoing immigration proceedings. Further updates are expected as officials review the case and release additional information.
