A 29-year-old man lost his life in a traffic crash Monday morning along Interstate 65 near the Hardin and Bullitt county line, according to the Kentucky State Police.
Troopers reported that the collision occurred at approximately 9:46 a.m. in the northbound lanes near the 103-mile marker. Authorities said traffic in the area had slowed due to a separate, earlier crash when the incident took place.
Preliminary findings from investigators indicate that a vehicle driven by Drew Cookenmaster of Hodgenville collided with the rear of a tractor-trailer as traffic backed up. Officials confirmed that Cookenmaster was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured, according to state police. No additional injuries were reported in connection with the crash.
Emergency responders and law enforcement remained at the scene for several hours following the collision. During that time, northbound lanes of Interstate 65 near the Joe Prather exit were closed for approximately three hours. Authorities said the closure was necessary to allow crews to investigate and reconstruct the scene.
Motorists traveling through the area experienced delays while traffic was diverted. Transportation officials worked to reopen the roadway as quickly and safely as possible once the investigation phase was completed.
