Kansas City police have identified the driver who died in a high-speed crash on Friday afternoon near Rockhurst University.

Authorities said the victim was 34-year-old Sterling Roaf, who was driving a Nissan Murano at the time of the incident. The crash occurred around 2:40 p.m. near the intersection of Rockhurst Road and Virginia Avenue.

Preliminary investigation indicates that Roaf was traveling south on Virginia Avenue at a high rate of speed and did not stop at a posted stop sign. The vehicle continued through the intersection, striking an unoccupied Jeep Wrangler parked along Rockhurst Road.

Following the initial impact, the SUV went over a curb, traveled up a grassy embankment, and rolled before colliding with the Corcoran Building on the Rockhurst University campus.

Roaf, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries and later passed away.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash to determine contributing factors. No additional information about the incident has been released at this time.

Authorities remind motorists to obey traffic signals and posted speed limits to help prevent serious accidents.
