Authorities are investigating a tragic house fire that claimed the life of a woman in her mid-60s Tuesday night in Southfield. The incident also left three family members hospitalized with injuries related to burns and smoke exposure, according to local officials.
The Southfield Fire Department responded to reports of a large residential fire around 8:20 p.m. at a home on LeeWright Avenue, near the intersection of 9 Mile Road and Telegraph Road. Fire crews arrived to find the home heavily affected by fire conditions. Approximately 25 firefighters were dispatched to battle the blaze and attempt rescue efforts.
The woman who died was identified as Jane Yaldoo. Family members said she was a mother of three and a grandmother to one child. Her passing has left relatives and neighbors deeply saddened as they try to cope with the sudden loss.
According to fire officials, three other individuals—Yaldoo’s brother and her two adult children—were already outside the home when firefighters arrived. All three were transported to the hospital for treatment of injuries, including burns and smoke inhalation. Their current conditions have not been publicly disclosed.
Southfield Fire Chief Joey Thorington explained that the intensity of the fire upon arrival made rescue efforts more difficult. He noted that while crews always attempt search and rescue operations as quickly as possible, the severity of the situation limited what could be done in the early moments of the response.
Family members expressed shock and grief following the incident. Patrick Yaldoo, a relative of the victim, said the family is heartbroken and struggling to understand what happened. He described Jane Yaldoo as a kind and caring person and said the family is waiting for more information as investigators work to determine how the fire began.
Neighbors also shared their sorrow over the loss. Gerald Putman, who lives across the street, said he had known the family well and often saw Jane spending time outside her home during warmer months. He described the situation as devastating and said it has been difficult for the neighborhood to process the loss.
Putman also noted that fire crews remained in the area late into the night as they worked to fully contain the fire and secure the scene. The presence of emergency responders underscored the seriousness of the incident and its impact on the community.
The Yaldoo family is now mourning their loss while awaiting answers. Officials have confirmed that the cause of the fire is still under investigation, and no further details have been released at this time.
Fire Chief Thorington used the incident to remind residents of the importance of fire safety. He encouraged everyone to ensure that smoke detectors are working properly and to take extra precautions during cold weather, particularly when using space heaters or other heating devices.
As the investigation continues, community members are keeping the Yaldoo family in their thoughts during this difficult time. Authorities say updates will be provided if additional information becomes available.
