Walter Blaser, AULANDER, N.C – Authorities in Bertie County have released the identity of the man who died following a house fire that occurred last week in the town of Aulander. The incident remains under investigation as officials work to determine what caused the fire.
According to Bertie County Sheriff Tyrone Ruffin, the victim has been identified as Walter Blaser. Sheriff’s officials said Blaser died as a result of a fire that broke out at a residence located in the 100 block of Harmon Street on Tuesday. Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene after receiving reports of a structure fire.
When firefighters arrived, they learned that one person had managed to get out of the home safely. However, officials were informed that an elderly man was still believed to be inside the residence at the time emergency responders arrived. Fire crews immediately began efforts to manage the fire and search the home.
Witnesses who spoke with local media following the incident indicated that the man who lived at the residence did not survive, while his wife was able to escape. Authorities have not released additional personal details out of respect for the family.
Emergency personnel on scene attempted to provide life-saving assistance to Blaser once he was located. Despite those efforts, officials confirmed that he could not be rescued. Firefighters and first responders later secured the area as part of the ongoing response.
Several agencies are now working together to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fire. The Bertie County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation with assistance from the State Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the North Carolina State Department of Insurance. These agencies are responsible for examining the scene and reviewing evidence to determine how the fire started.
Officials emphasized that investigations of this nature take time and involve careful analysis. At this stage, authorities have stated that there is no indication that criminal activity played a role in the fire. Investigators have also said that no foul play is suspected.
The sheriff’s office has asked the community to be patient as the investigation continues. Additional information may be released once the review is complete and officials have a clearer understanding of the cause.
Local officials extended their condolences to the family and loved ones affected by the loss. They also acknowledged the efforts of first responders who worked at the scene under challenging conditions.
Residents are reminded to follow fire safety guidelines and ensure working smoke alarms are installed in their homes. While this incident remains under investigation, officials say safety awareness can help reduce the risk of future tragedies.
Updates will be shared with the public as more information becomes available through official sources.
