According to police, officers were dispatched to the area around 6:56 p.m. after receiving reports of a collision involving pedestrians near the intersection of East Sprague Street and Burgundy Street. When emergency crews arrived, they found two individuals who had been struck while attempting to cross the roadway in a designated crosswalk.
One of the pedestrians, a 28-year-old woman identified as Kayla Marie Allen, was pronounced deceased at the scene by emergency medical personnel. A second pedestrian, a 55-year-old man identified as Alphonzo Dennard Galloway, sustained injuries that were described as minor. He received medical attention, and his condition was not considered life-threatening.
Police said the vehicle involved in the incident left the area immediately following the collision. Officers began searching for the vehicle and were able to locate it a short time later. The driver was taken into custody following a brief pursuit that concluded in a nearby neighborhood. Authorities confirmed that the driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
The driver, identified by police as a 25-year-old man, has been charged in connection with the incident. Officials stated that the charges include offenses related to leaving the scene of a crash and attempting to avoid law enforcement. The individual remains in custody as the investigation continues.
