SOUTHINGTON, Ohio – Authorities in Southington Township have released new information regarding a tragic two-vehicle crash that occurred Wednesday evening, confirming the identity of the woman who lost her life in the incident. According to details shared by the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the victim has been identified as 50-year-old Hollie Markun of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. The crash took place at a busy intersection often used by local commuters, adding to the somberness of the event.

The highway patrol’s Warren Post reported that the collision happened around 6:25 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. Route 422 and State Route 305. Based on their early findings, investigators say Markun was driving a 2023 Honda Accord northwest along Route 422. As she arrived at the intersection, she attempted to make a left turn onto westbound State Route 305. During this turn, her vehicle came into the path of a 2023 Jeep Cherokee that was heading southeast on Route 422. The two vehicles collided, resulting in significant damage and prompting an emergency response from first-line responders across the area.

The driver of the Jeep, identified only as a 30-year-old man from Youngstown, was injured along with his passenger. Both individuals were taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital for evaluation and treatment. Authorities noted that their injuries were not considered life-threatening. Medical personnel and law enforcement officers responded swiftly, ensuring that all individuals involved received timely assistance.

Despite efforts at the scene, Markun sustained severe injuries during the crash, and officials later confirmed that she did not survive. Her passing has brought deep sadness to her family and community. The Ohio State Highway Patrol expressed condolences while noting that incidents like this highlight the unpredictable and heartbreaking nature of roadway collisions. As with all fatal crashes, the agency is continuing a thorough investigation to understand all contributing factors, including visibility, timing of the turn, and other possible circumstances.

In the hours following the crash, a portion of Route 422 was shut down to allow investigators, medical teams, and cleanup crews to work safely. Traffic was diverted around the area through alternative routes, and drivers were urged to use caution. By later in the evening, the roadway was cleared and reopened for normal travel.

Officials have not released additional details and have emphasized that the investigation remains active. Their work typically involves analyzing vehicle positions, roadway conditions, lighting, and any mechanical issues that may have played a role. Witness statements and other evidence will also be reviewed to create a full understanding of how the crash unfolded.

Residents in the Southington Township area expressed shock following the incident, especially because the intersection where the crash occurred is one used daily by many local families, workers, and travelers. While law enforcement has not indicated any wrongdoing or ongoing concerns, the crash serves as a reminder of the importance of caution, especially when navigating intersections and making turns across oncoming traffic.

Community members in Beaver Falls and the surrounding region are mourning the loss of Hollie Markun, remembering her as a loved family member and friend. More details may be released as the investigation progresses, but at this time authorities are focused on completing a careful review of all evidence and ensuring that all involved receive support and accurate information.
